Plato’s Cat

IMG_2937Pepe has a new strange new fascination with the shadows of birds at the birdfeeders, which hang just outside the cats’ favorite window in the kitchen. They’re thrown on nearby cupboards and walls by the sun. Just like in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, he would rather turn away from the actual birdfeeders and birds that he can see through the glass and watch the animated shadows thrown on surfaces nearby. He actually turns his head sideways as if pondering their significance. (If only the human wasn’t chuckling when she tried to take the picture!)IMG_2938This is a new and will be a short-lived (or at least seasonal) hobby.  We are approaching the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, so the sun is slowly moving toward its southeastern-most point in the sky (the window in question faces south). On the day before, day of, and day after winter’s official arrival, the sun will stand still in the sky, then slowly begin making its journey to the northeastern-most point in the sky, which will culminate at the summer solstice.  By mid-winter, the sun will be pouring through the window over the sink and Pepe’s new-found fascination with bird shadows will have to take a break until next fall.
