Living with Carnivores

A vegetarian human's adventure with cats

The Wall Switch

Mac has developed a whole series of devious tactics for waking the human up in the middle of the night and getting her out of bed long enough to refill the crunchy bowl. (Try as we can, neither Pepe nor the human have been able to teach Mac how to spin the wheel on the automatic feeder so she can dispense a few crunchies for herself…and why would she when she can torment the human?)

One of Mac’s most annoying tactics is to stand up in one of the kitty beds and pull down the switch on the wall, killing all power to the bed. That effectively stops the mobile phone from recharging (and backing up files), shuts off the light (if it was on at the time), and kills power to the far-infrared mattress pad — a real pain in the backsides in cold weather. To make her threats even more effective, she makes sure she scratches loudly on the wall before killing the power. If that fails to wake the human, an alternative method is to jump down to the floor and pull the power cord out of the wall that feeds all the bedside goodies.  Such a little monster!

Show us Your Sassy Face!

This is the “Hurry up and get your tail out of bed and put food in our dishes” sassy face.

<<Such a bad human!>>

Stealing the Attention

Pepe was on the freshly made bed rolling around at the junction where the sheet and blankets fold over the duvet cover.  He was enjoying the pets and attention the human was lavishing upon him.  All of a sudden, Mac jumped up and demanded some attention too.  Pepe, who doesn’t like to share, wasn’t pleased. Since the human began splitting her attentions between both tuxedos, Pepe got up and left in a huff.

Show Us Some Tummy

Corky does lots of cute things, but he does them quickly. Unfortunately, he rarely hangs out in the cute position long enough for the human to find her phone and snap a few pics. However, the other day, she managed to walk in and find him laying on the floor on his back with his cute, soft tummy showing. (He was laying on a sheet of crackly paper, so it’s possible he had just enjoyed some catnip and that’s why his reactions were a bit slower than usual.) He laid there looking at her while she snapped away, then rolled to his side and got up and swiftly left the room. Guess that was all the cuteness the human was going to see for the day…at least from the Corkster.

Toothpaste as Treat

Fireball has an interesting obsession. He just LOVES the taste of the poultry-flavored enzymatic toothpaste.  For him, it’s a treat. He’d eat most of a tube in a single sitting if the human was willing to cooperate. If only the other cats were equally willing to try some.

Frenemies

The human was shocked to find “frenemies,” Fireball, Corky, and Pepe all laying next to each other on one of the beds.  Given that brothers Corky and Pepe chase the Little Red Bee up and down the stairs nearly every night, it’s always interesting to find them putting aside their differences and sleeping together. During colder weather, Corky and Fireball can often be found cuddled up together under the blankets that hang over the upstairs banister.  And during the day, Fireball and Pepe can often be found sleeping next to each other on the human’s bed enjoying the far-infrared heated mattress pad.

Surveying the Kingdom

The Emperor decided to hop on top of the human and survey his kingdom from an elevated vantage point.  For the most part, the servant was cooperating and his lords and lady were being respectful.  It’s a lot of work keeping a kingdom running smoothly, particularly when you’re trying to keep a rebellious human in line.

The Monster under the Bed is Now IN the Bed!

The human was trying to make the bed. <<Silly human!>> Pepe had other ideas.  He slid across the surface and put his head under a fold of sheets and blankets. Over onto his back he went with legs kicking. The human tried tickling him, which led to flailing paws and fake biting attempts.  Do you see the little kitty face peering out at the tricksy human? Aren’t those toes cute? Eventually the Monster tired and lay still, although he kept one paw out just in case.

Risking Life and Limb

Mac is usually a mellow creature unless there’s a bowl of crunchies nearby… or, unless she’s gotten into the Wild Wood Weed…note the glint of mischief in her eyes? Then she becomes a menace to society, or at least a danger to the human’s hands and fingers.  Interestingly, she never actually eats catnip. Rather, she rolls in it and gets her coat absolutely coated. Nope, she doesn’t lick it off, she just shakes her coat and tosses the fine particles all over the room, but only once she’s finished thrashing around and is trying to find her dignity again.

His Majesty

The human was trying to make the bed. Caesar wasn’t budging.  So His Majesty was (sort of) made into the bed. He posed in a regal fashion.  At least she didn’t mess with his paws.

Two Little Mice, Out for a Stroll

And almost stepped on by the hurrying human.

<<So what do you think was going on here?  Is this the work of two cats who, after running around with toys in their mouth, put the toys down on the floor to chat?  Or was it one cat who brought two toys over to the edge of the stairs and then strategically positioned them there for the human to trip over? Hmmm….Don’t you wish you better understood the inner workings of kitty minds?>>

She of Little Restraint…

Pepe was reclining. The human approached. Those soft toes looked so inviting. <<Bad human!>>

Yin-Yang Kitties

Here are Mac and Caesar curled up in a yin-yang cuddle. Before the human intruded with her camera, Caesar’s head was down and facing Mac’s haunches, so the effect was even more compelling. And see that little patch of disturbed fur on Macaroni’s side? That’s a “cowlick” from Caesar’s grooming efforts. Such a thoughtful and caring kitty!

Another Beige Mouse Takes a Dunk

The beige-colored toy mice have been seeing all the action lately.  This one spent the night in a bowl of food that the cats hadn’t finished. Yuck!  Not sure if this is a statement about the human’s choices of food offerings or an attempt at being generous and feeding the toys.

Floors are So Much Better to Eat off of than Bowls

The human and her camera were a touch too slow to capture this properly, but here are Pepe and Corky eating their breakfast snack of raw/freeze-dried nuggets with some water and nutraceuticals.  Of course, instead of eating the soppy, messy food in the bowl, each brother — at the same time — dragged a nugget out and dropped it on the floor, then proceeded to eat from there. Cats!

Puzzle Feeder

And here is another “smart” toy that the human purchased for the kitties. That dark blue ball in the center with holes holds crunchies and spins around when you push or pull it, causing a small amount of crunchies or raw snacks to spill out through holes in the side of the white base.  As long as the human is willing to spin the ball and dispense crunchies, Corky, Fireball, and Macaroni are big fans of the gadget. In fact, Mac wakes the human up every few hours during the night asking her to spin the ball so she can have another crunchy snack. However, only Pepe seems to have figured out how to push the ball with his paws or his face, and even he has yet to push it enough to dispense crunchies. Another smart toy that has proven uninteresting to the smart cats, who prefer the human slave doing all the hard work of dispensing food.

Ignored

To celebrate the kitties’ arrival anniversaries, which are less than 2 weeks apart, the silly human purchased two toys that were supposed to enrich their environment and stimulate both their problem-solving and hunting skills. Both toys have been pretty much ignored. For example, this cute one is a rectangular box covered with fake grass on top and with cutouts both on top and on the sides. It has 3 or 4 cute little blue balls inside (with bells) that the cats are supposed to cuff around by poking their paws through the holes. They can’t pull the balls out through the holes in the side of the box but they can scoop them out through the top.  Only Pepe plays with this toy and only when the human has run the laser pointer’s red dot along its surface.  So much for smart toys for smart cats.
