Living with Carnivores

A vegetarian human's adventure with cats

Category: Furniture

An Unlikely Pairing

The cats never cease to amaze the human.  Certain personalities that don’t get along most of the time can suddenly be found cuddled together.  Take this sequence of shots of Pepe and Fireball on the back of the couch. (And note that Corky is sitting nearby in the bottom left of the frame.)  Pepe often chases Fireball. While I don’t believe he means any harm by this — he chases anything that moves and half the things that don’t some days — still he scares Fireball because he’s so big and aggressive. Yet here they sit quite close without any concerns whatsoever…at least none that they showed. (Fireball would have been out of there if he felt the least bit threatened.) Go figure!

Dangle Buddies

Because it’s been really cold of late, the human put the much beloved far-infrared heating pad back on the bed.  Both two-legged and four-legged people love that device! The pad has a 10-hour heating cycle before it automatically shuts off. That’s perfect as the human turns it on a little while before she plans to dive into bed so everything is toasty when she arrives. And she turns it back on in the morning when she gets up so the cats have the benefit of the penetrating warmth during the day when they’re snoozing upstairs. (Keeping them happy helps ensure the human gets work done on the lower floor.) Between the fleece blankets, the soft padded kitty beds, and the far-infrared heat, some of the cats are loathe to leave the bed even for their breakfast — meaning the human has to hand deliver food right to their “nest.”  The human saw Caesar and Mac lounging with paws dangling the other morning and just had to snap a few pics. Caesar looked like he was recovering from a night of indulgence, and Mac acted like she was standing guard over here big pal.

Mystery Muddy Footprints

It’s been brutally cold of late. We had snow flurries on Halloween and last week  it dipped below freezing for the first time in half a year.  The human had to haul the houseplants in from the great outdoors a couple of weeks back, including the big ficus tree. For a while she had the large pot (and its plentiful supply of soft fresh soil) barricaded with some containers to keep little kitty feet out.  However, one of the barricades had to be moved and the repositioned items clearly did not dissuade kitty visitors. The human came downstairs the next morning only to see a whole path of dirty, muddy footprints coming out of the pot and moving across a runner on the (unused) woodstove. (They’re subtle, but clearly visible in both photos above).  While she cannot prove it, the human suspects the Merkitty made a nocturnal visit. The human has redoubled her efforts to build an effective barricade, and so far that seems to be working. Give her time and the Merkitty will find a way back into the pot just because she’s not supposed to be there.

Pepe Inspects the New Chairs

The human bought new kitchen chairs back in August. She kept them for a few weeks only to decide she didn’t like them and returned them to the store.  It took another few weeks to look around and find replacements that she liked at a price she was willing to pay. Meanwhile, Pepe was without a chair of his own, which led to all kinds of early morning complaining from Mr. Sassy Face.  He had to sit on the floor instead of standing on a chair and making furtive attempts to put paws and other body parts on the table when the human’s head was turned away. Finally, the human found chairs she liked and ordered 4 of them for the house. It took another week or so to get them delivered, but what you are seeing here is Pepe’s first inspection of the new furniture in early October.Pepe is not one to be overly generous with the flowery language, but so far he seems to be accepting of them.Thank heavens she got kitty approvals! The human would hate to have to go find another set she liked.

New Fake Fur Kitty Blankets

The human was at the fabric store a few weeks back (always a dangerous place to be!) purchasing some fleece to make some gift blankets for family and friends. It’s nearly impossible to walk past the remnants bins without having a bit of a look.  Fortunately, the human found two lovely synthetic “furry” fabric pieces that were just the right size to put in the kitty beds.  As usual, she proudly brought home her gifts and presented them to the kitty overlords and waited to see how they responded. Rather than the usual disdain her gifts are met with, this time the new fabric got an appreciative nod from the feline kingdom. As you can see, the Merkitty had a nice mix, then flopped down on top of the fabric and rolled around on it. (I guess that means she marked it as her own.)Pepe, Fireball, Caesar, and even Corky all checked out the new blankets and seemed to like them as well. So nice to finally find something the kitties like and that will keep them warm and cozy as winter closes in on us.

Between a Pillow and a Pillow

At the foot of the human’s bed, the kitties have a wide swath of fake-fur fabric that they adore.  There also are 2 small pillows strategically placed to cushion little kitty heads and faces as they sprawl across that fabric. They love those little pillows.  During bed-making duties, the human apparently did not properly distribute the pillows one day recently. When she came back upstairs, she found Corky literally wedged between the two pillows. (Perhaps having pillows on the front and back of Corky’s body felt comforting — like lying in one of the kitty beds.) It looked so cute that the human had to shoot a few photos. Miraculously, Corky sat still and posed for 3 shots.  Notice the nice new green collar?  He too is now wearing a sparkly adornment, which helps Fireball know when either he or his brother Corky are trying to sneak up on the Little Red Bee.

How Not to Strip a Bed

It’s not just bed making that’s fun in this house, it’s also bed stripping. The human went to change sheets on two beds last week and had loads of help from the Pepster for both jobs. As the human tried to roll and pull the sheets together, he had to jump into the middle of them and spin around. Pretty soon he was wrapped up in the sheets. Then the real fun began. There were lots of cuffy paws that attacked human fingers and hands. See, there really were monsters under the bed. And now they’re on top of the bed and hiding in the bedding.Of course, in between attacks, that silly face reappeared and dared the human to do something about the menace. This position (above) is called “sassy face.” It’s usually accompanied by much chattering. Yes, Pepe does feel good about himself.  Cute behaviors like these are definitely not conducive to getting an early start on the work day.  Ah well, eventually the silly 2-legged did get both beds stripped and remade.  Getting to work early is so overrated anyway.

How Not to Make a Bed

The human was trying to make the bed before all the mammals in the house headed downstairs for breakfast. One wily feline kept attacking the bedding every time the human would try to pull a wrinkle out or otherwise straighten the fabric. If he didn’t run, jump, and slide on top of the sheet, he grabbed and kicked it. And then feeling good about himself, he swam across the fabric. We didn’t fare much better with the duvet. A 5 minute job became a 20 minute job, made even longer because the silly human kept taking photos and then laughing…which just egged on the ham-ster.
But honestly, could you keep a straight face during such shenanigans? Eventually the bed monster tired of his actions….And the silly human was allowed to finish her morning chores.

Do You think Yellow Makes me Look Too Round?

Or do you think it goes well with my silky fur coat?  It’s really soft.

Double Trouble

The two tuxedo kitties were found sitting together on the top level of the downstairs kitty condo the other day. Clearly, something interesting must have happening out on the deck.  You just never know what nefarious creature might show up.  There are frequently squirrels, chipmunks, and birds. Less often there’ll be a woodchuck or a raccoon or even an opossum looking for something edible in the potted plants (or just being plain old destructive for the fun of it).  And it’s not unheard of for the herd of deer that wander through the yard each day to have a member stick a head over the railing and eat some tasty flowers or vegetables. Fortunately for the human, there are 4-legged guards on patrol at all hours. <<It’s handled, human. Be off and let us do our job!>>
