A vegetarian human's adventure with cats

Double Trouble

The two tuxedo kitties were found sitting together on the top level of the downstairs kitty condo the other day. Clearly, something interesting must have happening out on the deck.  You just never know what nefarious creature might show up.  There are frequently squirrels, chipmunks, and birds. Less often there’ll be a woodchuck or a raccoon or even an opossum looking for something edible in the potted plants (or just being plain old destructive for the fun of it).  And it’s not unheard of for the herd of deer that wander through the yard each day to have a member stick a head over the railing and eat some tasty flowers or vegetables. Fortunately for the human, there are 4-legged guards on patrol at all hours. <<It’s handled, human. Be off and let us do our job!>>

Kilroy was Here

This was how Caesar was laying this morning when the human got up.  He was in nearly the same pose in his picture on PetFinder 5-1/2 years ago. She fell for him immediately upon seeing that photo and began the process to meet and adopt him. Clearly, that pose still has an effect on the silly 2-legged, but who could resist a kitty like that? <<Certainly not I!>>

A New Kitty Condo Visitor

Until recently, the downstairs kitty condo hasn’t been getting a lot of love.  Then Pepe adopted the kitty caves, followed by Corky.  The other day, the human had picked up after breakfast and decided it was time to move the downstairs kitty condo over next to the window for the summer now that the houseplants were at last outside. That way, even on hot days when the thermal shades are down, the kitties can peek out the window and make sure no nefarious creatures are lounging on the deck.  The well-made scratching post must weigh 40 pounds/18 kilograms, so the easiest way to move it is to tilt it and start spinning it across the room on the bottom edge like you would move a barrel.  As the 2-legged grabbed the the condo and prepared to move it, suddenly a little face stuck out of one of the kitty caves. The silly human squeaked and ran off to find her camera. Meanwhile, the Merkitty enjoyed herself by smirking while pictures were taken. Needless to say the condo didn’t get moved that day, but a day later, it took up it’s summer position. We’ll see if it continues to be of interest to the cats now that it’s on the other side of the room.

Corky Catches Some Sunshine

And look who the human caught out the other afternoon catching some sunshine!  Of course, as soon as the human and camera came close, it was time for some gratuitous grooming. << Must ensure coat looks spiffy for pictures!>>When the annoying human got too close, it was time for a change of scenery, so off he hopped into the bay window.  At least the human managed to get 3 photos in a row where Corky is in focus and not just a grey blur. That’s progress of a sort.

Mr. Dangle Paws Strikes a Pose

Look at Mr. Dangle Paws. Aren’t those lovely toes?  Aren’t his feet big? They are amazingly soft…not that the human is allowed to pet them very often.  If he sees the human coming, as often as not Caesar tucks his front feet away under his chest so she can’t play with them. Not sure why the human got away with petting and photographing them this time, but I suppose it’s all part of cats hating to be predictable.

Couch Potatoes

The human took a break from slaving away on the keyboard and walked into the living room the other day. Surprisingly, she found both Mac and Pepe stretched out on one of the couches.Of course, the Mackadoodle was dangling a paw and looking a tad mischievous.Pepe, on the other hand, looked like he was the epitome of the well-behaved kitty.  (And he too was doing some paw dangling.)  This week’s hot weather (after a prolonged cool spell) seems to have contributed to the kitties looking for new places to sleep in cooler parts of the house.

Double Decker

Speaking of kitty condos, the other morning, the human walked by only to see Pepe’s face peeking out of the lower “cave” in the downstairs kitty condo — a level he doesn’t usually frequent.  <<Drats, I just moved the blanket that was in the lower level to the upper level so Pepe would be more comfortable and now he doesn’t have much padding. >>She stuck her silly human hand into that hiding spot meaning to retrieve one of the fleece blankets only to find a little kitty body in there. She petted the kitty and carefully lifted the blankets to see who was there and was greatly to find Corky reclining in the upper cave. It’s not too often that the biological brothers sleep that close together.  And it may well be that this is the first time in the 5 years the 2 kitty condo/scratching posts have been in the house that one of them had 2 cats inhabiting both kitty caves simultaneously. You just never know what you’re going to find with this crew.

Pepe has a New Hiding Spot

He’s been camping out in the downstairs kitty condo’s 2nd “story” cave.  With all the fuzzy blankets draped over that cat scratching post, if you aren’t careful when you walk by, you completely miss him.  And probably, that’s the whole point! On the other hand, being Pepe, he usually can’t resist the urge to reach out and touch you with one of those paws as you walk by, thereby letting you know where he’s hiding. So much for the element of surprise!

Mercuddles

And once again we see the Merkitty and the Little Red Bee cuddling while the early morning light is streaming in the window. For a change, Mac actually seems like she’s comforting Fireball…or at least it looked that way until the human got too close with the annoying camera and started snapping pictures. This time she’s not sprawling on top of the little guy.Come close with the camera, and everyone’s attention is on high alert.Don’t their eyes look zany? Fireball seems to be worrying about what the human will do next (she kissed both of them moments before). Mac, on the other hand, seems to be thinking that if she can just endure this a bit longer…

Fireball Catches a Spot of Sunshine

The Little Red Bee was seen venturing out of his soft bed and catching some afternoon rays. And being a cat of this house, he was of course dangling at least one paw while chillin’ in the sunshine. (Those who’ve read this blog for a while may recognize the infamous fountain that the Merkitty loves to dismantle in the background.)
