Living with Carnivores

A vegetarian human's adventure with cats

Month: January, 2021

Tight Fit

<<<<My big brother takes up most of this bed, although he does keep it nice and warm.>>>

<<<And when he’s in the bed, I can’t sculpt the blankets the way I like. Ah well, when you’re the last cat in, you have to take what you can get.>>>

Pepe Helps Make Grammy’s Blanket

Here’s Pepe helping the human make her own mother an extra heavy blanket for her 90th birthday..

<<Happy birthday, Grammy! I made sure my human made things correctly!>>

Rabbit Treats

These are not treats for a rabbit but rather treats made from rabbits. The human thought it would be a nice afternoon snack for the monsters when they got hangry and ganged up on her asking for something to eat. Of course, the grain-free, high protein (and not inexpensive) treats sounded great to the 2-legged, but not to the 4-leggeds, who took a few nibbles and walked away. It’s not an easy task being the food buyer and preparer in this house.

Corky Cuts Loose

Corky had all the tools of the cat entertainment trade before him. He had a box to climb into as well as a paper bag. He had a piece of crackly paper dusted with dried catnip and silver vine. (You can tell from his coat that he’d recently had a roll in the nippy.) And he had the spinning wobbly toy, which, despite all his best efforts to push it over onto the ground, always managed to stand back up again.

Unfortunately, before he had exhausted his appetite for self entertainment, an interloper appeared.

Yes, the Merkitty (aka Macaroni) had just entered the room. Talk about stealing his chill.

Since the Mer loves nothing better than jumping in the middle of whatever the other cats are doing — be that snoozing in one of the kitty beds, having a grooming party, noshing on snacks, or playing with toys she’d ignored for weeks until another cat decided to have a bit of fun — she hopped right into the middle of Corky’s game without even asking if he’d mind. He minded.

However, uncharacteristically, he didn’t leave the room. Instead, he skulked around the outside edges for a few minutes. Since Mac likes other cats to entertain her a whole lot more than she likes entertaining herself, she quickly tired of the toy and flopped down on the floor to take the measure of her situation. Perhaps she was hoping Corky would come over and lavish some attention on her.

And that was all Corky needed. Quickly he zoomed in and started cuffing at the wobbly toy again.

Mac looked a tad put out. Such is life in this house.

Toys Need Snacks too

Sliced chicken. Check. Toy mouse. Check.

Clearly, that mouse needs a bath after frolicking in the food bowl. Good thing the human discovered (by accident) that the toy mice can go through a full load of laundry and not delaminate. Oddly enough, that’s not the case when they spend the night in one of the water bowls. <<<Sigh.>>>

Elliott’s Blanket Under Construction

Pepe also helped the human make her nephew’s blanket.

By rolling around on the fabric, he helped ensure that Elliott’s own kitties would have some interesting smells to investigate when the blanket arrived.

Overflow

Why do you suppose it is that the biggest cat always has to try and occupy the smallest kitty bed or box or bag?

Note the subtle shift in Caesar’s eyes that shows he’s quite aware that the human is sneaking up on him with the camera? (He’s likely already planning his escape route if the two-legged annoys him too much.) His paw is perilously exposed and he knows it. Still, the human was well behaved and just took a couple of photos and then left the big guy alone.

Look What She Did to My Nails!

<<<First the evil human used the even more evil clippers on Caesar and then she used them on me. Look what she did to my beautiful nails! Is there no authority protecting bodily sanctity here? Okay, so maybe I was shredding the legs of her mahogany bed when she didn’t get up and refill my crunchy bowl at 2 am. Hey, I can’t eat out of it when the bottom is showing. Besides, how are these things even remotely comparable ?>>>

Mousy Dental Treats

The human tried out a new-to-the-household package of dental treats for the cats. Despite being fish flavored, the monsters ate them up. So, encouraged, the human went back to the petfood store and bought several more packages. At this point, the monsters decided that they did not like the fish-flavored treats and stopped eating them. However, they did put one of their toy mice in the treat bowl just to see if it liked the snack. It did not. The human now has 4 packages of dental treats that are essentially unusable. <<<Heavy sigh…>>>

Pepe Helps with Gary’s Blanket

Here’s the Merry Pepster helping make a blanket for the human’s friend Gary.

Even the presence of doggie images on the material didn’t deter him in his fabric-flattening efforts.

Velvety Paws

The evil human snuck up on Caesar and trimmed all the claws on his velvety forepaws. Now he can walk around on top of the two-legged and not get stuck constantly in the fabric. Merkitty is next!

The Human and the Clippers

<<<The human has been mumbling about trimming my toenails. I’ve managed to escape her every time she tries to sneak up on me with something in her hands. Only when the two-legged is laying down and mostly helpless do I flop down on top of her and demand the attention that is my due.>>>

Playtime for Corky

Corky is a big fan of the flat scratching disc with a single ball that rolls around it’s perimeter. He’s even a bigger fan of the 3-tiered tower with 3 different balls that can spin around the outside at the same time.

The Corkster hates it when the human catches him having a bit of fun by himself. If she’s not quiet while taking pictures, he stops what he’s doing and sometimes leaves the area.

Still, even when he’s aware that she’s watching, sometimes he’s just having so much fun that he forgets to be self-conscious and goes back to chasing the spinning balls.

He’s got the cutest little white paws and, when he’s into it, he really gets all 3 balls spinning simultaneously.

Don’t Try Pinning that on Me!

<<<Just because I stopped to look, doesn’t mean I’m the one that caused this. As we’ve discussed before, correlation does not imply causation. And, besides, I just got here.>>>

Feeding Your Toys

The care and feeding of your toy mice is an important aspect of being a responsible feline master. We didn’t like this food anyway, so we put our toy in the bowl to see if the mouse would like it. It didn’t. Still, it’s important that we offered.

Holiday Gift Giving

The human decided to make no-sew blankets again for holiday presents.

The one thing you have to understand about the human is that we have to keep an eye on her. Think of us as quality control experts.

First, the fabric has to be smoothed out and the selvage edges have to be trimmed.

Then top and bottom layers have to be lined up and pinned together.

Next, the corners have to be removed from each side and fringe has to be cut, folded backward, and a small slit cut in the center of each pair of fringe. Both pieces of fringe are pulled through that slit, locking the front and back of the blanket together.

Of course, all along, the pins have to be retrieved and put back in the pin cushion so no one gets poked.

What would the human do without all our help? And what would the blankets look like if we didn’t inspect them at each step?

Distressing Things that have Happened

It’s been so long since the human has posted that many things have happened to us that our fans don’t know about.

For instance, after inviting our neighbor’s cat to stay with us for 5 days — did anyone think to ask if we were okay with this arrangement? — a few weeks later, the human brought a small kitten into our house.

Granted, the kitten was only here for a few hours while the human arranged to bring it to a shelter. Still, she held it in her arms and cooed over it in our presence. We were not amused. At our age, we do not want to have to start all over and train a kitten.

Fortunately, the human took the tiny kitten away and the tiny kitten was eventually adopted. You have to stay on top of that two-legged every minute because, when you’re not looking, she’ll bring anything into this house.

The Very, Very Bad Human

The very, very bad human is still alive and still living with us. Yes, we have been merciful, even though she hasn’t posted on our blog since late October. How are we supposed to keep up with our fans? Still, we’ve let her know in many ways that she continues to disappoint us. We finally had a breakthrough this afternoon when we guilted her into creating this post. How long the guilt will last is anyone’s guess, but at least we’ve made some kind of progress.
