Living with Carnivores

A vegetarian human's adventure with cats

Bag Lady

Missy Mao has been enjoying exclusive use of the green soft-sided cat carrier.  Even when it’s hot, she can be found stretched out inside.  She loves sticking her little head out the wide “window” in the back and smirking. She’s such a Merkitty!

Belly Scratch

Pepe likes attention.  He really likes to have his belly scratched or petted or kissed or pretty much anything at all…until he doesn’t. If the human walks in and he’s laying on the bed — remarkably often flat on his back with his legs in the air — then he wiggles around as the human walks by begging for attention.  Let’s be honest, it’s really hard to resist.  And when the human does manage to resist for a few minutes to get some pics, Pepe seems puzzled that his best efforts to be cute and attract attention are failing him.  Fortunately, he doesn’t hold a grudge, and the human usually is unable to resist petting him or kissing his tummy for long.

Cats’ Life

The human’s 2-legged friends used to say they wanted to be reincarnated as her pets. (It’s an unfair rumor that the human spoils her furry friends.) In actuality, the 4-leggeds do have a pretty good life here, even if they don’t think so themselves. (What cat is totally satisfied with his/her surroundings?) They have cushy furniture to sprawl on and all the fleece blankets they could ever want or need.  They have the love and adoration of the human. They have the company of good friends, plus the eats here are pretty primo too.  For now, they’ll keep their human and their house.

Sleepy Bears

The human walked through the living room only to see Mac and Caesar, rump to head, sitting on one of the couches.  They looked so cute cuddled up together.  Of course, in stopping to snap pictures, the human woke up Mac. That prompted Caesar to turn around so he was head-to-head with Mac. It’s so nice to see such good kitty friends spending time together. And, for a change, the little minx wasn’t piled on top of the poor Emperor kitty.

Tuxedos Meet New Kitty Carrier

The human found a nice soft-sided kitty carrier the other day.  She brought it home and decided to open up both ends so the kitties could explore.  As luck would have it, the two tuxedos were in the kitchen at the time and they decided to check it out. First Pepe stuck his head into each end and had a sniff.  He actually followed some pen caps he and Mac had been chasing to the edge of the carrier and cuffed them around.  Next Mac went in the proper “door” and walked through the carrier and out the “window.”  For some reason, that got Pepe all jazzed up.  He returned to the carrier and looked out the window. Meanwhile, Mac was checking out the side pocket and a second larger “window.” He wisely understood that squeezing out the “window” would be a tight fit. (So much for this being a “big” carrier.) He backed out and hunkered down beside the carrier and peered at Mac, who was gazing off without interest.  Next, he prepared to pounce on her, but she was having none of this and got up and moved. This jockeying for attention went on for about 10 minutes.  Then all the cats disappeared and the human was left to pick everything up. Such is the entertainment found in this house most mornings.

Fireball Cuddles with his Blankets

Here’s Fireball zonked out in the space between his kitty bed and the blankets he’s peeled back.  First, he digs, then he slides under, next he mixes and sings, and last he sleeps. The blankets don’t do him a lot of good most days — at least in terms of staying warm. The human suspects he has another agenda and the blanket pile is a stand-in for his mother’s soft belly. Or perhaps this is the kitty version of a supported Bharadvaja twist.

Tiger Boy Cuddles

Here are the sweet Tiger Boys all snuggled up in a kitty bed with limbs and tails a tangle.Big Caesar has his big paw wrapped around his little “brother” Fireball.  Fireball has his prehensile tail all curled up and is enjoying being close to his adored best friend.  Not only does Caesar keep him warm and safe, but he grooms Fireball to boot. So glad these kitties are best buds. While they may not be biologically related, they have lived together for 8-1/2 years — 6 of them here — and they adore each other. That’s not to say they don’t get into tussles and rumbles. They’re quite noisy when they race through the house with the Emperor loudly chasing a squeaking, chirping Baby Comet.

Kitty Nest

The kitty nest is so comfy that neither the human nor the meows want to leave it in the morning or the rest of the day. It’s amazing what ample amounts of flannel, fleece, velour, synthetic fur blankets, and a far-infrared heating pad can do to ease a body in cold weather. (And, if you’re keeping count, there are 5 kitties on that bed.)

Me and My Blankies

This is Fireball, the Little Red Bee.  He loves being wrapped up in fleece blankets and putting his head on fleece-wrapped pillows.

Don’t Look at Me Like That!

It’s hard to figure out what Pepe is thinking here.  It is an interesting position he’s put himself in and not one he often takes.
